As part of its mission to reduce road-related fatalities and improve safety across Nigeria’s highways, the Authentic Traffic Management and Accident Prevention Initiatives (ATMAPI) has announced an upcoming training program for over 700 commercial drivers on emergency response and basic first aid.
The training will be conducted in partnership with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, health professionals, and local transport unions. It will cover life-saving techniques, including CPR, trauma care, emergency evacuation, and immediate response to road crashes—equipping drivers with the critical skills needed to assist during accident situations before professional help arrives.
According to ATMAPI Executive Director, Idoga Innocent, the training is designed to bridge the gap between accident occurrence and emergency intervention, particularly in rural and highway areas where response time is often delayed.
“Commercial drivers are often the first on the scene of an accident. With proper training, they can make the difference between life and death,” he noted.
The 3-day workshop will begin in Ibadan, Oyo State, and will be expanded to other major cities and transport hubs. Each participant will receive:
-
A First Aid Certificate of completion
-
A personal Emergency Safety Kit
-
Access to ATMAPI’s driver support network and safety platform
This initiative will also promote responsible driving behavior, reduce panic during road emergencies, and foster a culture of care and accountability among commercial transport workers.
ATMAPI plans to make this an annual program, with the goal of training at least 5,000 drivers nationwide by the end of next year.
